How to Colour Fondant

Soften your Fondant

Before colouring, start off by softening the fondant in our hands. If you're working with a small amount of fondant you can do this by kneading it with the palm of your hand, then pulling it and rolling it back on itself continuously until nice and pliable.

If you're working with a large amount of fondant, knead it like clay or bread dough with both hands on a hard surface. Pushing into the fondant with the base of your hand, folding over the top and repeating until soft.

Important: Ensure your fondant is consistently smooth with no crust or crumbs throughout. This will ensure a lump-free surface when rolling out.

Colour and Blend

Once your fondant is nice and soft, apply a very small amount of colour to the surface. For a small amount of fondant, one drop will be more than enough.

Tip: To create beautiful pastel shades, use the tip of a tooth pick to apply colour! Dip the top of the tooth pick through the top of the lid and then swipe onto your fondant.

Then, just like when you were softening the fondant, thoroughly knead it with your hands to blend the colour. Continue kneading until there are no streaks and the colour has fully dispersed throughout the fondant.

Note: while you can use Oil Based (oil based colours) colouring for fondant, we suggest opting for Aqua Blend (water based colours). This will keep your fondant at a manageable consistency and avoid over-softening.

Colour, Twist and Roll

Start by colouring your fondant. You will need a minimum of 2 different colours.

Once your separate pieces are coloured, roll them in between your hands to create 'worms' of fondant. Twist your worms together until fully intertwined. Fold the coiled piece onto itself and knead just like you did when softening.

Once the fondant looks blended into once piece, you can beginning rolling it out! Ensure you keep rotating the fondant to get a nice and even spread.
