Four Techniques, One Showstopper

Delicious is one thing, dazzling is another. This tiered pièce de résistance? Well, it’s both. We wanted to design a cake that didn’t just taste amazing, but also turned heads and the secret was mixing multiple decorating mediums.

    Fondant Tips & Tricks
    Four Techniques, One Showstopper

Some cakes are just desserts. Others? They are tiny works of art. This tiered beauty falls into the latter category. How did we make it pop? By mixing decorating mediums: fondant, airbrush, buttercream piping and moulded decorations. Here's a behind-the-scenes look at the elements that brought this cake together.

    The Foundation: Fondant

First things first, we gave our cake a smooth, flawless base by covering each tier with White Decorators Dough coloured with Oil Blend Blush. This step is key as it not only provides structure but also creates a clean canvas for everything that follows. Fondant is unbeatable when you want crisp edges and a smooth, clean finish and the soft pink shade sets the perfect tone for the rest of the design.

    Benefits of using Fondant:

    • Creates a perfectly smooth, polished surface.
    • Allows for crisp edges and professional looking tiers.
    • Provides a stable base for adding other decorations.
    • Can be coloured with Oil or Aqua Blend to make unlimited shades, giving full creative control (hello matching fondant and buttercream!)

    Bringing It to Life: Airbrushing

Once the cake got its Blush foundation, we grabbed the airbrush to add a layer of colour to give the cake depth and dimension. A gentle mist of Aqua Blend Raspberry and Mint created a soft gradient over the fondant, adding visual drama and highlighting areas that would later be accented with piping.

    Benefits of Airbrushing:

    • Creates smooth gradients and seamless colour transitions.
    • Adds visual depth and dimension to the cake.
    • Highlights textures and details on fondant.
    • Quick and precise application.

    Adding Texture: Buttercream

Next, we reached for Gloss Frost Buttercream to introduce both interest and softness. To keep the design cohesive, we used the Oil Blend Blush in a lighter shade than the fondant, creating a match made in heaven. We used a range of piping tips to create accents that pop against the smooth background - 353 Medium Leaf, 2C Medium Drop Flower & 1A Medium Round.

    Benefits of using Buttercream:

    • Adds detailed decoration without disturbing the smooth fondant base.
    • Creates visually striking accents and textures.
    • Colour can be matched perfectly to the fondant with Oil Blend.
    • Allows for a variety of shapes to be piped - roses, borders, swirls and more!

    Adding Dimension: Fondant Decorations

Finally, we brought in a touch of 3D magic using moulded fondant decorations. Delicate bows, ornamental designs and beads were carefully applied to the cake, adding a sculptural element that enhances the overall design.

    Benefits of Moulded Details:

    • Adds three-dimensional detail for visual interest.
    • Can create precise, consistent shapes that are hard to achieve freehand.
    • Complements piping and airbrushed elements seamlessly.
    • Allows for creativity with textures, patterns and shapes.

Each technique adds it's own flavour to the design: fondant gives structure, airbrush adds atmosphere, buttercream brings delicate detail and moulded decorations add dimension. Layer them together and suddenly you’ve got a cake too pretty to eat! So next time you’re decorating, don’t pick just one medium - mix, match and watch your cake level up!
